EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT STRATEGIES

Why We Do What We Do

At our company, we understand the challenges many clients face on their path to well-being. Despite seeking help from numerous professionals, achieving lasting functionality in life can remain elusive.

  • Through our approach, we’ve recognized that a substantial number of our clients struggle with maintaining stable nervous systems, often due to developmental or other traumas, as well as heightened sensitivity to stressors, neurodevelopmental differences, and many other difficulties.
  • By focusing on stabilizing the nervous system, through innovative technology, neuroscience and psychotherapy; we’ve witnessed remarkable enhancements in our clients’ daily functioning, empowering them to lead more fulfilling lives.
  • When the nervous system is regulated, it operates in a state of balance and harmony, effectively coordinating and integrating various bodily functions to maintain overall health and well-being.

Laura Childers

Laura is the founder of Houston NeuroSolutions. She earned her Licensed Professional Counselor designation in 1994 and initially worked in the mental health field until 2000. She then transitioned to financial counseling for a Fortune 500 company, gaining valuable business experience. After a decade in finance and another as a stay-at-home mom, Laura discovered brain mapping and neurofeedback in 2014, which inspired her to pursue advanced studies in the field.

Laura’s practice integrates advanced technology, neuroscience, and psychotherapy, focusing on nervous system health. She assists clients with various challenges, including toxic relationships, addictions, PTSD, ADHD, depression, learning disabilities, insomnia, TBIs, anxiety disorders, long COVID symptoms, and cognitive decline. Laura enjoys working with couples, families and individuals. Laura is committed to finding the root cause of her client’s struggles.  Many of her clients have been to numerous doctors and clinicians but struggle to move to the level of thriving, beyond surviving.

Her assessment process allows her to consider medical, neurological, sleep, and psychiatric/psychological issues, leading to more specific and effective referrals.

By examining brain function, clients often gain a new sense of hope and clarity. They appreciate the insight from their assessments and are excited to embark on a journey of discovery, where they are seen as experts in their own lives. Laura provides her expertise and training to help them find clarity, direction, and healing.

Committed to staying at the forefront of neurotherapy, Laura continuously pursues advanced education and mentoring in emerging techniques.

Riikka Clifford, MS, LPC Associate, NCC, MentorCoach®

Riikka Clifford, MS, LPC Associate, NCC, MentorCoach®, is a clinical therapist at Houston NeuroSolutions. She sees her clients as resourceful and resilient individuals who collaborate with her to achieve increased relational insight, self-discovery, and overall improved functioning. In her practice, she avoids labeling or pathologizing, instead favoring a strength-based and holistic approach.

Riikka holds a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from the University of St. Thomas. After providing traditional psychotherapy for a couple of years, she realized that traditional talk therapy was not sufficient for all clients. This realization prompted her to seek treatment options for clients, particularly those who needed extensive self-care to get through their daily lives. Riikka discovered neurotherapy through her collaboration with Laura Childers at Houston NeuroSolutions. At Houston NeuroSolutions, Riikka integrates advanced technology with psychotherapy to provide comprehensive treatment.

With a personal understanding of cultural differences and their impact on identity, relationships, and life experience, Riikka brings a unique perspective to her practice. Born and raised in Finland and having lived internationally, she appreciates diverse experiences. Outside of her professional life, Riikka enjoys spending time with her family and dog, exploring art and nature, and visiting the many coffee shops Houston has to offer.

characteristics of a regulated nervous system

What does the nervous system do?

  • Balanced Stress Response

The body's response to stress is appropriate and proportional to the perceived threat. Stress hormones such as cortisol are released in response to stressors but return to baseline levels once the stressor has passed, preventing prolonged activation of the stress response.

  • Clear and Focused Thinking

Cognitive function is optimized, with individuals able to concentrate, focus, and maintain attention as needed. Memory recall is efficient, and decision-making is rational and effective.

  • Consistent Mood and Emotional State

Emotions are experienced and expressed appropriately, with individuals able to modulate their emotional responses in different situations. There is a balance between the activation of stress responses and the ability to relax and experience positive emotions.

  • Steady Heart Rate and Blood Pressure

A regulated nervous system helps maintain a steady heart rate and blood pressure within normal ranges. It achieves this through the balanced activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system.

  • Healthy Sleep Patterns

Sleep-wake cycles are regular and restorative, with individuals experiencing sufficient deep and REM sleep stages. Sleep disturbances are minimal, and individuals wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

  • Optimal Digestive Function

The enteric nervous system, often referred to as the "second brain," regulates digestive processes effectively. There is smooth digestion, absorption of nutrients, and elimination of waste without issues such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea.

  • Responsive Immune System

The nervous system communicates effectively with the immune system, helping to regulate immune responses to pathogens and prevent autoimmune reactions. Inflammation is controlled, and the body is able to mount appropriate immune responses without excessive inflammation or immune dysfunction.

  • Adaptive Response to Environmental Stimuli

The nervous system responds appropriately to sensory stimuli from the environment, allowing individuals to perceive and interpret sensory information accurately. Responses to stimuli are adaptive and contextually appropriate.

“The nervous system shapes our perceptions, determines our reactions, and ultimately defines our experiences.”

“From the smallest sensation to the most complex thought, the nervous system is at the core of our existence.”

“A well-functioning nervous system is the foundation of resilience, allowing us to adapt and thrive in the face of challenges.”

“The health of our nervous system influences our ability to learn, to love, and to live fully.”

“The nervous system is the conductor of the symphony of our lives, orchestrating every movement, every emotion, and every experience.”
